Moussem of Tan-Tan
Annual gathering of the nomads of the Sahara in Tan-Tan in south-western Morocco, with a market, camel and horse competitions, music and poetry. UNESCO proclaimed it in 2005 and took it onto the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008.
What it is
The Moussem of Tan-Tan is an annual gathering of nomadic peoples of the Sahara in south-western Morocco, attended by more than thirty tribes from southern Morocco and other parts of north-west Africa. In UNESCO’s description, a moussem is a kind of annual fair with economic, cultural and social functions.
In 2005 the Moussem was declared a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”, and in 2008 it was taken onto the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is organised by the Almouggar Foundation.
Where it comes from
Tan-Tan lies between the great desert and the coast, in a transition zone between the Atlas, the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. Thanks to its water, the Oued Noun region was a place where oasis dwellers and nomads met.
History
Originally the nomads met once a year, around May; the gatherings were part of the annual cycle of farming and herding. People came together to buy, sell and exchange food and other goods, to hold camel and horse breeding competitions, to celebrate weddings and to consult herbalists. The nomads obtained grain, dates and manufactured goods, and sold above all wool and other products of their herds.
In 1963 the first Moussem of Tan-Tan was held, to keep local traditions alive and to create a place for exchange, encounters and celebration. For the nomads, whose way of life has been deeply changed by economic and technical upheavals and many of whom have settled, the Moussem is a way of preserving their knowledge and traditions.
How it is made
The Moussem has always included music, popular song, games, poetry contests and other oral traditions of Hassani culture. Today the programme features dromedary races, Tbourida performances, gatherings of the tribes, popular games and exhibitions of local crafts, as well as a large parade with several hundred participants in traditional dress.
In a large pavilion, themed tents show the daily life, customs and skills of nomadic society. All the tribes are represented in the tribal tents, around thirty of them; when the Moussem was inscribed on the UNESCO list there were 34. There are separate areas for horses, for dromedaries, for children and for the popular games of the Hassani nomads.
When
The 19th edition was first planned for 3 to 7 October and is now taking place from 30 October to 3 November 2026 in Tan-Tan and El Ouatia, under the motto “Le Moussem de Tan-Tan, patrimoine humain et pont d'échange culturel”. Musicians from the region, from Morocco and from abroad play on several stages, and the closing on 3 November is an evening of Hassani poetry.
